Approximately 920,000 shelter pets are euthanized every year. However, approximately 4.1 million shelter pets are adopted every year! Also about 810,000 lost pets are reunited with their owners. So far more are being adopted and reunited then being euthanized.

Newer Statistics show approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year and approximately 2.7 million are euthanized every year. Of those approximately 2.4 million are healthy and could have been adopted.

Only 10% of pets entering shelters are spayed or neutered. Also 25% of shelter pets are purebred. Many have been owned for less than a year! Just five states account for 52% of euthanasia deaths in shelters. Overpopulation is the biggest reason for euthanasia deaths. So what can you do to help?
